Consumer Direct Wine Sales Up 26% in 2005
Consumer direct sales by U.S. wineries leaped 26% to $2.3 billion in 2005, according to VinQuestý 2006, a study provided by VinterActive LLC, Windsor, Calif. More than 300 wineries in 33 U.S. states provided information for the study; 59% reporting that the fastest growing sales channel was direct sales. During the year, winery tasting room sales grew 33% to $1.5 billion; event-driven sales at wineries amounted to $143 million, up 46% and Internet direct sales tallied $135 million, up 40%. Responders said the major barrier to consumer direct sales in 2005 was shipping cost/compliance. Projected direct sales in 2011: $5.4 billion.
